MH17 Trial Finds Three Guilty Over Downing of Plane
Verdict over crash of Malaysia Airlines passenger jet sets possible precedent for prosecuting those involved in Russia’s war in Ukraine
A panel of Dutch judges found three men guilty of murder over the shooting down of a passenger jet over eastern Ukraine in 2014 in a trial that sets a possible precedent for the pursuit of justice against Russia and the leaders of its war against Ukraine.
All 298 passengers and crew were killed when Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 crashed after being struck by a Russian-made missile supplied by Russia and launched from a field in an area held by Russian-controlled armed groups, the presiding judge said in a summary of the verdict.
The three men found guilty—two Russians and one Ukrainian—were involved in the deployment of the Buk antiaircraft missile launcher used to shoot down the jet, the court said. A fourth defendant from Russia was acquitted.
