tram opicina technical failure suspension service trieste transport
04.03.2025 – 13.01 – There is no peace for the Opicina Tram . A technical fault has forced Trieste Trasporti to suspend the service so loved by the citizens and welcomed back with great enthusiasm after years of absence. It will resume – if all goes well – on Thursday 6 March . But what happened this time? «During ordinary maintenance operations – we read in the press release issued by the company – an anomaly was found in a component of the shield carriage of the funicular system of line 2. Technical investigations have confirmed the need to replace the component to ensure the complete restoration of the functionality of the tram system». Therefore, we read again «the shutdown for almost nine years of a technically complex but also antiquated system, behind the strong stress resulting from the commissioning, is highlighting difficulties that were not detectable during ordinary maintenance». It is possible to assume that the reactivation of the service occurred, therefore, in a somewhat hasty manner.

«The repair interventions, also in this case, see the company committed without rest to resolve the fault well and quickly, in full and absolute compliance with procedures and safety standards» explains Trieste Trasporti. Therefore the company concludes: «Based on the state of things detected, while maintaining the commitment to do it as soon as possible, it is estimated that the service will be restored by Thursday morning, the updates will be promptly provided by the company». The technicians are working hard to resolve the problem and restore the service in a short time so as to make it regular and usable again but given the conditions of the infrastructure – very unique in its kind and existing only in Trieste – it is to be imagined that there will be more interruptions and suspensions from now on. The Opicina Tram started operating again on February 1st with 19 trips and terminus in Piazza Dalmazia and Opicina. It was said that by the beginning of March there would be three operational vehicles with 58 trips daily . Everyone's hope is that even the much-loved Opicina Tram will finally become a little less of a "disgrace" because from the events of these days it seems that it will never emerge from this long-standing condition.
