Stargate: Universe. A third television series in the hit Stargate franchise is now in development. The new series is in the concept phase, and is being actively worked on by the Vancouver creatives, Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, behind Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. The working concept for the third Stargate television series includes the Stargate's ninth chevron and will take place during the present time.
In the new show, now in preliminary stages, "we figure out what the ninth chevron is for, and it sends us somewhere very interesting," Wright says.
The idea of Stargate Universe is that it is set on a ship that was part of an Ancient experiment that was set in motion probably millions of years ago. The Ancients sent out two ships: an automated vessel to place Stargates throughout multiple galaxies in our universe, and a second ship to follow up and explore. The ninth chevron is used for one Stargate to connect to the Stargate onboard the exploration-ship.
As for the team, no details have been released yet. However a rumor is spreading a character that has appeared in Stargate SG1 or Stargate Atlantis might be leading this new show.
Beware that the Stargate Universe concept is still in an early stage of development, and some change is inevitable.
